Since moving to Canada, and travelling through various parts of North America, I have met people from all over the world.Īdmittedly, I know that I probably wouldn’t have formed relationships with these people had I met them when I was still in my bubble at home in Australia. Living abroad has opened my eyes to just how narrow minded my life was prior to becoming an expat. Pro: You get to meet new people from different backgrounds and cultures. Every single time when we cross the border, I get so excited it still feels so surreal.
Quite often, my partner and I just get in the car and drive to the USA spontaneously and plan the trip along the way. Being able to do this is still a novelty to me even though I have lived in Canada since 2017. As an Aussie, it is simply not possible to get in my car and drive to another country. Incase you are the single one person who has never seen a map before, I should point out that Australia is totally separate from all other countries. The ability to drive so freely to another country. All of these winter specific activities are far less available in Australia so I really make an effort to make the most of them while I’m living here. Toronto, and Canada has some great winter activities such as ice skating, dog sledding, snow shoeing, skiing and snow boarding. Experiencing these completely frozen waterfalls still stands as one of the most amazing things that I have seen while living in CanadaĪlthough it often hard to motivate myself to do anything in the sub zero Canadian temperatures, I always force myself to get out and experience Toronto in the winter as I know this is something that I will miss when I am back in Australia. Prior to moving to Canada, I had never seen snow, nor experienced temperatures below about ten degrees Celsius. Some of the major differences between Canada and Australia that I have enjoyed experiencing include: The differences in weather:Īlthough a lot of people complain about the weather in Toronto, I have (tried to) embrace it as much as possible as it is so different to Australian weather. Although, most people would assume that the two countries are quite similar as they are both english speaking Canada and Australia are actually quite different which I love!Įxperiencing things and places that are different to what I’m used to, is scary but has made for the most memorable time living abroad. Pro: You get to explore new places and experience new things that may not be available in your home country.Īs an Australian, moving to Toronto, Canada back in 2017 was a HUGE adjustment for me.
Con: Going home if need be isn’t always so easy.
